COMPARATIVES-SUPERLATIVES

COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES

Adjectives can compare two things or more than two things. When we make these comparisons, we use comparative and superlative adjective forms.

The rules depends on type of adjective:
  • If the adjective has one syllable, more than one vowel or more than one consonant at the end, we add -er at the end in the comparative and add -est in the superlative. Example: Tall-Taller-Tallest.
  •  If the adjective ends with -e and has one syllable, we add -r in comparative or -st in superlative. Example: Nice- Nicer- Nicest.
  • If the adjective has one syllable, one vowel and one consonant at the end, we write double the last consonant and add -er in comparative. In Superlative is the same but we must add -est. Example: Big-Bigger-Biggest.
  • If the adjective ends with -Y with two syllables, we have to change -y to -iand then add -er in comparative and -est in superlative. Example: Happy-Happier-Happiest.
  • When the adjective ending with -er, -le or -ow and has two syllables, we must add -er in comparative and -est in superlative. Example: Gentle- Gentler- Gentlest.
  • In other adjectives with two syllables, we add "more" before the adjective in comparative and most in the superlative. Example: Beautiful- more beautiful- most beautiful.
  • In comparative, all adjectives must be follow by the word "than".
  • In superlative,  all adjectives always comes before word "the".
